 East Grand Togue
Got a nice 28" Togue out of East Grand on Friday morning. Didn't have a scale but weighed in at 6.5 lbs two days after the catch. Funny thing is I almost lost it Friday night to a raccoon. I thought it was a little too cold for them to be out yet but he thought he hit the lottery and pulled it off the woodpile on the porch while we were eating dinner. Found the Fish down the driveway where he'd left it after we started looking for it. I got some pictures and with some help from one of the great moderators on this site hopefully they'll get inserted!

Nice laker you got there. It never gets to cold for coons. Cold nights they stay near their den trees but get up above 20 and they will move all over.

Yeah, I kinda figured that out the hard the way. My trapping buddy wasn't around this past fall. He usually takes 3-4 right around the camp. They always come to scavenge the partridge guts after we clean them. Unfortunately they went pretty hungry this past fall.

Actually I got him using a big sucker that I sliced up along the back, and split down the middle. He was still swimming when I dropped him down. I tried the jig trick on the brookies, but I kept losing my smelts! I think they were smaller trout.

Hard to beat a wounded sucker down the hole for lakers. We use alot of dead bait and they seem to hit them just as well. My rule of thumb is dead bait= bottom, wounded = 6" of bottom.

Rem, your gonna make me blush . I had him six inches off bottom John. Some guys at EG say that if you keep them 5-10 feet off bottom you'll still catch togue but won't catch the cusk, but I like to CATCH fish. Plus ugly as they are they make a great chowder.

Oh yes the ugly cusk!!! One of the only freshwater fish in Maine we can commercially fish for. One wouldn't think there is a market for cusk but!!!!!!!! There is..
I like your thinking on you go to catch fish. I take alot of kids with me so we always set for the maximum amount of flags no matter what bites.
John
Matter of fact, I just took an order in for 200 lbs... Going to be busy nights now until the end of the season.LOL

I can understand why they don't allow night fishing for Cusk on East Grand, but I think they should consider to open it up to the U.S. coves. With the size and quantity you can catch during the day there I can only imagine what it would be like to do it at night. Actually I know a couple guys that do know what its like... Its EXPENSIVE!!!

I understand the expensive part only if you get caught.
I spent 4 years getting the okay from the State and also the USDA to sell freshwater fish here in Maine. They are allowing me cusk, yellow perch and now we are working on hornpout. Yellow perch can be a big seller if you market it in the right geographical location.

What do ya get per pound for the yellow perch?
I hail from Cleveland, OH area right on Lake Erie. Jumbo lake perch are great eatin. Right up there with walleye. I do not catch many around here.
Is there some good lakes or ponds in Maine for the yellow perch?
If there are yellow perch and pike around, are there also walleye in Maine?
Never heard of any but I would like to find some place closer than lake Erie to catch some nice walleye....
Thanks
Greg

Yellow perch are everywhere in southern Maine!
One time, somebody illegally stocked walleye in the Belgrade lakes. It took hundreds, maybe thousands of folks lining the shoreline with pitchforks to kill them when they came to the shallows to spawn.
There were some pretty pssed Mainers for a long while and even threats of hanging the guy who did it if they caught him!
Just the mention of those fish here could initiate a response from the Homeland Security guys and S.W.A.T. teams may be gathering around your home as we speak!

Hopefully they ate all them dead walleye's.
Could have been a bird that brought them walleye's into Maine.....
That would be a nature thing...
I have a pond we dug back in the woods that is spring fed. Not close to the river or other ponds. It has fish in it somehow. We never put them in, but they are there.
I did find that we can go to Lake Champlain and get plenty of walleye for a good feed. Thats only 4-5 hours instead of 13 hours.

Odd the mention of Walleyes here as I had just found this comment on illegal fish introductions in the state. I was aware of the old turn of the century stuff but was not aware of the more recent introduction. Dumb people.
Walleye - originally were unsuccessfully introduced into Great Pond (Belgrades) in the early 1900's (Everhart 1958), and were last observed in 1953 (David Locke, retired Maine DIFW hatchery superintendent). Adults only, illegally introduced in Long Pond (Belgrades) within last 5 years. Fish biologists are quite concerned that walleye could possibly spread and become established throughout the Belgrade lakes (pers. comm. Scott Davis, Region B, Maine DIFW, as reported in Morning Sentinel, Maine Lore, January 31, 2002). However, the numbers of adult walleyes caught in Long Pond appears to be dwindling - from one in 1996, to 5 in 1997, a high of 14 in 1998, four in 1999, and three in 2000 (Ken Warner, Editor, Maine DIFW, Fisheries & Hatcheries Research & Management Report 2002). Apparently, there have been no signs of any reproduction or juvenile walleye observations to date.
